Stretch, Strengthen, Define

Stretch

We all know the benefits of flexibility--fewer injuries, greater range of motion, (which often leads to greater clubhead speed which equals greater distance), and a smoother more effortless swing.  I'm not expecting you to swing like Bubba Watson (click for a look at Bubba's swing), but you'll be amazed at how good you feel when you get the kinks out.

Sometimes it takes months or years to develop greater mobilization. It all depends upon how calcified you have become!  You don't need to rush it, but do yourself a favor and begin some type of flexibility exercises as soon as you finish reading this article.

Strengthen

You can always strengthen muscles, even when you are 90 and sitting in your rocking chair at the InnerDrive Home for Aged Golfers. (Did you really think I'd let you relax just because you made it to 90?)   Many of you confess that you start going to a gym every winter and quit after about 6 weeks into it. Understandable, "inside the beltway" types are workaholics.  Here are a few ideas:

  • Gardening and yard work are perfect. We hire a crew to do our yards so we can go to Gold's Gym and pay to work out. Hmmmm.
  • Ride a bike, swim, jump rope, walk, run, skip
  • Set some dumbells beside the TV
  • Swing a heavy club or protator
  • Walk up stairs every chance you get

Golf Posture-- "Stay tall and stick your butt out." Ever heard me say that?  In order to maintain good posture throughout the swing the old "core" or torso area has to be strong.  If I have ever worked with you on posture, click here: HERE

Recommended by Mary Riddell:  OrchidPagoda     You all know Mary, she's the lady with the beautiful swing that lives on the 6th mat from the end at Hilltop, not to be mistaken with Mike Wilson or Nick Willard, though they both have pretty swings, too.  Anyway, Mary highly recommends Pilates and she frequents and raves about OrchidPagoda in Fairfax. Contact Sarah Christensen and tell her you are an InnerDrive golfer looking for a stronger core. She'll fix you!

Define

Gov. Schwarzenegger is definitely defined. At least he was.  But that's not what I'm talking about. Define your goals, pick two or three of the most important ones and start working towards them.

Ideas to get you started:

  • Get my body together (see above)
  • Buy some new clubs that fit me
  • Regrip your clubs, clean out your golf bag
  • Work on my short game
  • Leave work when everyone else does so I can practice
  • Be able to walk 18 holes (let me know which courses still let you do that)
  • Break 100, break 90, break 80, break 70
  • Meet an eligible man/woman on the golf course (Hey, that's legit! Whatever gets you out there is okay by me.)
