The restored pier, new seawall featuring dramatic sculptures and the Marine Way Bridge are new landmark features, which provide additional interest to the town."  The Ribble Coast and Wetlands

Front of The Atkinson

"The real jewel of Southport is The Atkinson, an imposing Victorian building which dominates Southport’s principal thoroughfare Lord Street, but don’t be fooled: inside it is welcoming and friendly. A short walk from the pier, and opposite the main shops and arcades, The Atkinson describes itself as ‘a cultural pick ‘n’ mix’ – and you can well see why: it’s a museum, art gallery, library and theatre all in one. But unlike actual pick ‘n’ mix the Atkinson is both satisfying and good for you, with a particularly fine Egyptology collection. The bakery on the ground floor also offers great snacks and quality coffee for those in need of a rest and a recharge.

If you’re looking for something a touch more nautical, then you can take a short drive (or cycle, as there is an excellent coastal cycle path) down the front to Ainsdale Sand Dunes (which, confusingly enough, are actually located in Formby rather than Ainsdale). A number of trails weave in and out of the gently rolling dunes, making for a fun hour or two of exploration. They back onto Formby beach, which stretches smoothly down the coast and is regularly voted as one of Britain’s best.

In a similar vein, and within Southport itself, are the Botanic Gardens. With its nationally renowned flower displays this is a must for anyone with even slightly green fingers. It’s a couple of miles away from the centre of Southport proper, so give yourself plenty of time if you intend on walking to it, but the accompanying café means you can stay for as little or as long as you like."
